BATON ROUGE – Last night, Congressman Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) was honored by the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity for founding and co-chairing the Congressional Dyslexia Caucus with Congressman Pete Stark (D-CA).  He was honored at the caucus’ Dyslexia Awareness Event at the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge.  A picture of the Congressman and the center’s directors Drs. Sally and Bennett Shaywitz is below.

“I am honored to receive this award,” said Cassidy.  “Dyslexia is a challenge which can be addressed.  Americans with dyslexia have the best chance to succeed and contribute when they receive educational interventions and accommodations which empower them to do so.  It is the aim of this conference and of the Congressional Dyslexia Caucus to advocate for dyslexics and their families.”

“The efforts of Congressman Bill Cassidy and Congressman Pete Stark are an extraordinary courageous and pro-active movement forward in the battle to address dyslexia,” said Dr. Sally Shaywitz.  “On behalf of the one in five who are dyslexic, their parents and the nation that needs their contribution, we salute and thank Congressmen Cassidy and Stark, through whose efforts dyslexic children and adults now finally have a strong voice in Congress.”

The ceremony opened the caucus’ Dyslexia Awareness Event, which featured a screening of HBO’s “The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia” at the Shaw Center on Monday, November 12.  It was followed on Tuesday morning by a forum on the past, present and future of dyslexia at Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
